Fixed missing genres in Genres folder.
Added a Top Genres folder.

The genres are really tags from radio-browser.info. When someone adds a station to radio-browser they can add any tags they want. There are over 10,000 tags now and many of them only have 1 instance. Currently FrogRadio only shows tags as genres that have at least 50 instances. The Top Genres are the 25 tags that have the most instances. So while these tags are not really music genres, if properly used, they can be a good way to find stations that play certain kinds of music.

Fixes for Countries and Country Flags

The country flags in FrogRadio come from this GitHub project. The project supplies a look up table to translate from the radio-browser country long names to the two letter country code the flag files are named. There are some country names that are spelled differently so I have yet another table to map the differently spelled country names to the correct country code. To see all the flags in a large format take a look here.

Importing M3U files

FrogRadio for macOS as of version 1.7.8 can import m3u files that contain multiple stations. The m3u file may contain various data for each station in the following format:

#EXTINF:-1,Station Name
#EXTIMG:https://station.com/icon.png
#EXTWEB:https://station.com
https://station.com/jazz

#EXTINF lists the station's name. #EXTIMG is the icon image for the station. #EXTWEB is the website for the station. The last line is the actual URL for the station's audio stream. Only #EXTINF and the last line with the stream are required.

When importing an m3u file, you can set the name of the folder the stations will go into. Also, the stream URL can be a local file if specified like file:///song.mp3. A folder in FrogRadio can be turned into a playlist by right clicking on the folder name. If a folder is a playlist all the songs in the lists will be played; the next one starting when the previous one ends. This implies that the streams are mp3 audio files, not infinite radio streams.

Note also, that the imported m3u file itself can be a remote URL of the form https://host.com/stations.m3u or a local file of the form file:///Users/username/Desktop/stations.m3u.

You can now mark a folder as a playlist (right click in folder name), and it will play all the tracks in the folder. This supports importing playlists of mp3 files.
FrogRadio now properly imports m3u files that contain multiple stations or mp3 files.
You can import local (file://) or remote (https://) m3u files which may contain local or remote mp3 urls.
Shazam can now always be used to identify artist and track name. This is an advanced setting and should not be used normally since artist and track name are usually sent by the station. But if playing mp3 files Shazam will do it's best to identify what music is playing.

More improvement for syncing your favorites to and from iCloud. The main change in the last update (1.7.0 and 1.2.0) was to cache your favorites on device. This is for situations when Apple's iCloud servers are slow or not responding. It should also improve FrogRadio's start up time. Favorites Disappearing?

If you have been having problems with your favorites folder disappearing it should be fixed now. FrogRadio uses Apple's iCloud to store your favorites and to sync them between your devices. For some months now this iCloud syncing service has not been working very well. This issue has affected many macOS and iOS apps. It has been difficult to get any help with this from Apple until recently. There has been some more public mention of the problem now and Apple says the problem is fixed. It seems like this is true and we are no longer seeing this problem in FrogRadio.

Do you use the Shazam app on your Phone? Or the very similar Sound Hound app? These apps can identify the music that is playing in your environment. The technology behind them is pretty amazing. Even in a loud room they can ID the music playing and provide you with artist name, track name, album art and more. In the most recent release of macOS (12.0) and iOS (15.0) Apple provides the Shazam system built into the OS. Siri can be used to access Shazam and ID music. Pretty cool. But also, developers can now use the technology in their app. Why would FrogRadio need to use such a thing when most radio stations send along the track info with the music stream? Well, there are some stations that do not send the info. It's alway been frustrating when you hear a song and want to know more about it but the station does not send it. Shazam to the rescue! FrogRadio can now ID music tracks from these stations. If you want to try it go to KEXP or WCNI. (You need to have FrogRadio installed for those links to work.)

A couple of notes: the Shazam system is pretty solid. It gets the track correct almost all the time. One exception is ambient music. Many ambient tracks can have sections that sound like other tracks, so occasionally the wrong track name and album art will be shown. For most other music genres it gets it right all the time. Another note: FrogRadio is not using the microphone on your Mac to listen to the music. Instead it collects samples of the music directly from the stream as they are played over your speaker or headphones.

We added podcasting support to FrogRadio 1.4.0 for macOS and released it recently. We are now adding syncing, via iCloud, to the app which will allow you to keep your podcast subscriptions, listening positions, etc., synced up between multiple Macs running FrogRadio. The new syncing feature is in the testing phase and will be released soon.

If you have not tried listening to podcasts on FrogRadio it's quite simple! First, turn on Podcasts in Preferences. Then use the search panel to find something you want to listen to. You can enter the name of a podcast you know or try entering a subject you are interested in. Then check the search results folder to see what was found. To subscribe to a podcast, select it and the press the favorite ⭐ button. FrogRadio will the add the podcast to the Podcasts folder and show new podcast episodes as they are published.

Podcast listening is not yet supported in FrogRadio for the iPhone but that will be coming soon…

SomaFM just introduced a reggae channel! I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. It’s available in FrogRadio of course, just click here, after reloading stations from the File menu or restarting. The channel is called “Heavyweight Reggae”. Here is Rusty’s story of the new channel:

When Dion and I first discussed a reggae channel over a year ago, he suggested a format that "would cover Jamaican music of the 60s, 70s and early 80s, specifically, what I like to call Heavy Reggae."

As for the name and logo, Dion says "Jamaicans have lots of songs about boxers and boxing matches. Prince Buster was a boxer before his musical career took off." And Heavyweight Reggae was born.

Our first task was getting together the base music library. "So much music was created in Jamaica during this time, that the music potential is seemingly limitless. Like Soul, there is much out there that you cannot find on CD or digital formats," says Dion. SomaFM loves deep tracks and hard-to-find gems. Heavyweight Reggae pulls from the station's and his personal collection of CDs, digital and vinyl sources.

Currently playing station is highlighted in the folder view.
In Settings you can now add a station if you know the URL of its stream.
In Settings you can now delete all your iCloud data.
Most station folders are now loaded when opened, not at start up.
This will make start up faster as we expand the station catalog.
More reliable syncing to iCloud.
Many small improvements and bug fixes.

New Feature: Power Level Meter. Turn on/off in Prefs. Click to turn on/off temporarily.

Removed FabricIO analytics. We now do our own code for this. All anonymous as usual.

Basic podcast listening will be supported. You will be able to search for podcasts to subscribe to, as well as import padcast feeds directly.
A new level meter is available on the main interface for those who like the visual aspect of music.

FrogRadio now has a Recently Played menu.
FrogRadio now supports sharing the current station you are listening to with other FrogRadio users.
Check out the File -> Share Current Station menu.
Search now reports when nothing found.
